Meeting called to order 9:00 a.m. by President Rod Flack. Board members present included Pat Frantz, James Chitwood, Dave Price, Don Mellum, Gary Konop, Lee Schwartz and Wendi Boos – Larry Myers absent – attending a Rec Center Governing Board Meeting at Rod’s request. Also present was Larry Boos and Russ Wagner representing IT.
Rod asked for a motion to approve the January 2020 minutes; Don made the motion which was seconded by Pat. Motion carried.
Earl Powell’s request for two new classes was on our agenda. However, Ron advised that it was not necessary for Earl to attend the Board Meeting. The two classes (Solid Modeling and 3D Printing) were approved with no objections from the Board. Each class will cost $20 and will begin during the next few weeks.
Treasurer’s Report: James reviewed the club’s financial information for January 2020. He noted that club 2020 membership is less than 2019 figures; James and Rod reviewed the list of members who have not yet renewed and noted that these members had very few visits to the club in 2019. Further questions can be directed to James.
IT Report: Larry Boos reported club membership and dues renewal data for 2020. If members attend the February Meeting & Chili Lunch who have not yet renewed, they will be asked to renew back at the club.
Back Yard Extension Project Completion: Rod stated that the project has been completed and the payment to the Rec Center has been made. There was discussion regarding the purchase of a large shipping container storage unit to store tables, display boards, etc., out of the sun and weather. A 20’x8’x8’ container (painted beige) delivered to the club would cost approximately $3250. A motion was made by Dave, seconded by Don to purchase this storage container. The motion carried. This will be presented at the General Membership Meeting on February 13, 2020.
Facility Update: Rod stated that the architect continues work on building plans for the alley and facility project. No significant news to share at this time.
Laguna & Blaze Machine Update: Rod stated that the six (6) members who were trained on the La-guna are cutting patterns on the machine. As issues arise, the Laguna Tech Rep (Adam) has been very responsive to provide solutions quickly as needed. Making sure that the computer files are ‘clean’ and usable for the machine has been the biggest issue. The group needs more patterns to cut in order to continue to gain experience with the machine; Rod will announce this at the Feb. 13th General Meeting.
James Chitwood suggested that we communicate more with the group of members certified on the Blaze (about 90 in total; about 30 use the machine on a regular basis) by emailing them updates about the Laguna training process; status of new machine; learning curve for those trained on machine, what issues they are encountering; how is the training going, what are the next steps, etc. This will help provide accurate info and avoid misconceptions about the new Laguna and those involved in the training process.
Rod stated that Larry Myers has received information to purchase an educational license for VCarve software that would be installed on five (5) machines at the shop for $100. Members would be able to produce their designs at home using a free demo version of VCarve. They will bring the finished file to the shop for final processing. We are proceeding with this software purchase.
Village Store Procedure: Rod provided a draft of the Village Store Procedure that has been developed based upon input from Katie Van Leuven (Village Store Manager) and other clubs who display pieces at the Village Store. The purpose of this document is to clearly describe the process steps involved in displaying metal artwork by Metal Club members in a fair and consistent manner at the Village Store. The Art Display Committee has also reviewed this document. We will continue to fine-tune this document with input from club members. Once it has been finalized and approved by the Board, it will become our standard procedure to display Metal Club artwork at the Village Store.
Rec Center RR & P’s Revisions: The Rec Center is currently in the process of revising the Regulations & Procedures (RR&P’s) for Chartered Clubs.
Elections for 2020/2021 Term: At the February 13th, 2020 General Meeting, Rod will present the Nomination list which has been posted on the club bulletin board; nominations will also be accepted from the floor. Voting will take place at the March 12th General Meeting. New Board terms begin April 1, 2020.
Locker Requirements: Rod stated that Griff has assigned all available lockers to those on the Waiting List. This has proceeded very smoothly. There are still several lockers available (mostly on the bottom row). It was agreed to leave the current locker assignment procedure unchanged at this time.
Roundtable: Pat will be the key contact for the Metal Club for the Spring Craft Fair scheduled for March 21, 2020; Mike Bell and Avis Acton will also assist with booth assignments, etc.
Lee discussed issues with the quality of work orders completed in the Welding Area. Further discussions will be held to resolve these issues. Welding repairs on chairs are now prohibited.
Rod and Gary reminded the group that members must indicate the need for any shop repairs on the Maintenance Clipboard located at the Monitor Counter. Members are asked to not complete these re-pairs on their own; let the Maintenance Staff address these repairs during their Saturday morning sessions.
Plans for the Chili Cookoff Luncheon are proceeding; 170 members and guests have signed up for this event following the February 13, 2020 General Meeting.
It was moved to adjourn the meeting by James and seconded by Don. Motion passed. Meeting adjourned at 9:46 a.m.
